Of the Qur’an as Confirmation of Previous Scriptures
The Qur’an presents itself within a broader continuum of divine revelation, repeatedly engaging with earlier scriptures associated with the biblical tradition. Throughout the text, references are made to the Tawrah (Torah), the Injīl (Gospel), the Zabūr (Psalms), and to earlier revealed “Books” and “Scriptures” in general. These references function not only as historical acknowledgments but also as theological assertions regarding continuity, confirmation, and shared prophetic heritage.
وَآمِنُوا بِمَا أَنزَلْتُ مُصَدِّقًا لِّمَا مَعَكُمْ
And believe in what I have sent down confirming that which is with you.
وَلَمَّا جَاءَهُمْ كِتَابٌ مِّنْ عِندِ اللَّهِ مُصَدِّقٌ لِّمَا مَعَهُمْ
And when there came to them a Book from Allah confirming that which was with them.
قُلْ فَلِمَ تَقْتُلُونَ أَنبِيَاءَ اللَّهِ مِن قَبْلُ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
Say, 'Then why did you kill the prophets of Allah before, if you are believers?'
فَإِنَّهُ نَزَّلَهُ عَلَىٰ قَلْبِكَ بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ مُصَدِّقًا لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ
Indeed, he has brought it down upon your heart, by permission of Allah, confirming that which was before it.
قُولُوا آمَنَّا بِاللَّهِ وَمَا أُنزِلَ إِلَيْنَا وَمَا أُنزِلَ إِلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَإِسْمَاعِيلَ...
Say, 'We have believed in Allah and what has been revealed to us and what has been revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Descendants, and what was given to Moses and Jesus.'
لَا نُفَرِّقُ بَيْنَ أَحَدٍ مِّن رُّسُلِهِ
We make no distinction between any of His messengers.
نَزَّلَ عَلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ بِالْحَقِّ مُصَدِّقًا لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ
He has sent down upon you the Book in truth, confirming what was before it.
وَيُعَلِّمُهُ الْكِتَابَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ وَالتَّوْرَاةَ وَالْإِنجِيلَ
And He will teach him writing and wisdom and the Torah and the Gospel.
وَمُصَدِّقًا لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيَّ مِنَ التَّوْرَاةِ
And confirming what was before me of the Torah.
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ آمِنُوا بِمَا نَزَّلْنَا مُصَدِّقًا لِّمَا مَعَكُمْ
O you who were given the Scripture, believe in what We have revealed confirming that which is with you.
وَالْكِتَابِ الَّذِي نَزَّلَ مِن قَبْلُ
And the Scripture which He sent down before.
إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَا التَّوْرَاةَ فِيهَا هُدًى وَنُورٌ
Indeed, We sent down the Torah, in which was guidance and light.
وَقَفَّيْنَا عَلَىٰ آثَارِهِم بِعِيسَى ابْنِ مَرْيَمَ مُصَدِّقًا لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ مِنَ التَّوْرَاةِ
And We sent, following in their footsteps, Jesus, the son of Mary, confirming that which came before him in the Torah.
وَلْيَحْكُمْ أَهْلُ الْإِنجِيلِ بِمَا أَنزَلَ اللَّهُ فِيهِ
And let the People of the Gospel judge by what Allah has revealed therein.
وَأَنزَلْنَا إِلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ بِالْحَقِّ مُصَدِّقًا لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ مِنَ الْكِتَابِ
And We have revealed to you the Book in truth, confirming that which preceded it of the Scripture.
قُلْ مَنْ أَنزَلَ الْكِتَابَ الَّذِي جَاءَ بِهِ مُوسَىٰ
Say, 'Who revealed the Book that Moses brought?'
الَّذِينَ يَجِدُونَهُ مَكْتُوبًا عِندَهُمْ فِي التَّوْرَاةِ وَالْإِنجِيلِ
Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered prophet, whom they find written in what they have of the Torah and the Gospel.
وَلَٰكِن تَصْدِيقَ الَّذِي بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ
But it is a confirmation of what was before it.
وَلَقَدْ كَتَبْنَا فِي الزَّبُورِ مِن بَعْدِ الذِّكْرِ
And We have already written in the Book of Psalms after the Reminder.
وَإِنَّهُ لَفِي زُبُرِ الْأَوَّلِينَ
And indeed, it is in the scriptures of former peoples.
وَالَّذِي أَوْحَيْنَا إِلَيْكَ مِنَ الْكِتَابِ هُوَ الْحَقُّ مُصَدِّقًا لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ
And what We have revealed to you of the Book is the truth, confirming what was before it.
شَرَعَ لَكُم مِّنَ الدِّينِ مَا وَصَّىٰ بِهِ نُوحًا
He has ordained for you of religion what He enjoined upon Noah and that which We have revealed to you.
وَمِن قَبْلِهِ كِتَابُ مُوسَىٰ إِمَامًا وَرَحْمَةً
And before it was the Scripture of Moses to lead and as mercy.
إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَفِي الصُّحُفِ الْأُولَىٰ صُحُفِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَمُوسَىٰ
Indeed, this is in the former scriptures, the scriptures of Abraham and Moses.
